Daniel M. McGill
On February 5, Daniel M. McGill, former professor and chair of the Insurance and Risk Management Department at Wharton, passed away at the age of 93 in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. He will be deeply missed.
Originally from Maryville, Tenn., he was awarded his Ph.D. in economics from Wharton in 1947. He taught at Wharton from 1952 until his retirement in 1990. He was the first holder of the Frederick H. Ecker Professorship of Life Insurance. He founded the Wharton Pension Research Council in 1952 and directed its affairs until his retirement. He also was Executive Director of the S.S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education from 1954 to 1988.
A giant in the field of pensions and insurance, Dr. McGill offered testimony to many Congressional committees, and he wrote eight books, co-authored several more, as well as numerous papers on the topics. His textbook, “Fundamentals of Private Pensions,” first published in 1964 and now in its ninth printing, remains the pension industry’s authoritative text. His publication “Guaranty Fund for Private Pension Obligations” was a precursor of Title IV of the 1974 Employee Retirement Income Security Act.
He was the first chairman of the presidentially appointed Advisory Committee of the Pension Guaranty Corp. Additionally, he consulted with many Penn committees, private firms and governmental organizations, including the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve.
Jerry Rosenbloom, Emeritus Professor of Insurance and Risk Management, said of Dr. McGill:
“He was a true professional in every respect, a real gentleman who always made time for people. He was a mentor to so many people, and he changed many lives.”
Dr. McGill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine; his son, Doug; and several grandchildren.
Dr. McGill had extraordinary accomplishments in pensions, life insurance, insurance research and education in general. He received the Huebner Gold Medal in 1977, and was elected to The American College Board of Trustees in 1975 and served on the Board for nine years. Dr. McGill was on the Board when it made the decision to become academically accredited by Middle states.
