A New Voice Has Emerged in Financial Planning for Special Needs Families.
In January 2015, MassMutual partnered with The American College to establish the MassMutual Center for Special Needs, dedicated to educating professionals about the unique financial challenges facing families caring for loved ones with special needs. The Center will equip advisors to assist all clients dealing with family members who are unable to care for themselves because of developmental disabilities, injury, dementia, or psychological issues. It will also provide special needs advisors with continuing education essential to keeping them current and up-to-date on the latest developments within the industry, and laws affecting how they advise these families.

Adam Beck The MassMutual Center for Special Needs strives to be the nation’s leading voice on financial planning for people with a disability or other special need and their parents and caregivers. Recently named Interim Director of the MassMutual Center for Special Needs, Adam Beck, Esq., on the importance of the Center:
“Parents and siblings of special needs children, and those responsible for the care of a disabled relative, face unique challenges when it comes to financial planning. Education, eligibility for government benefits, housing, and quality of life are all part of the ongoing concerns of special needs families. There are few clients served by financial advisors for whom quality, compassionate, and thorough whole life planning is more important. This is not only a great time for The American College, it is an enormous opportunity for you as a financial planner to be a part of something great, and to connect with a truly exciting and especially rewarding professional experience. I look forward to making a difference together.”

RICP® is the Must Have Designation for Retirement Income Planning!
Our panel of RICP® designation holders were recently surveyed about the value of earning the RICP® designation. Of the 154 respondents, 131 (85.1%) were advisors and 23 (14.9%) held other roles related to retirement income planning. Notably, 99% thought that the designation had made them better at their jobs and that the industry would benefit from more advisors earning an RICP® designation.

Of the respondents that were advisors, 119 of 120 answered yes to the question, “As a result of completing the RICP® program, do you feel that you are doing a better job for your clients?” Some of the more interesting comments included:
  • “I am aware of more options for my clients.”
  • “The program made it easier to talk about planning an income stream and longevity.”
  • “It has provided an overall framework for the advice I provide, as well as expanding my knowledge base.”

MSFS: The Science of Planning.

The Master of Science in Financial Services (MSFS) degree program from The American College provides financial services professionals with the tools needed to analyze, plan and implement integrated financial and life strategies. The program includes practical case studies and client/practitioner scenarios so that the clients’ needs are addressed with expertise and confidence.

Based on feedback from our students, we have recently enhanced this program by adding a second residency. Now, new students will get to benefit from two on-site residencies, instead of the one previously required. Two residencies gives students even more in-depth instruction, interaction with peers, and personal attention only residencies can provide.
