The American College of Financial Services® Connections

The American College Faculty Influences the Financial Services Field
The faculty of The American College devotes more to the financial services industry than just their time to teaching students. They are thought leaders, contributing to many important and interesting articles in leading publications such as The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The New York Times and CNBC.

Recently published on Forbes.com, Jamie Hopkins, Associate Director of the New York Life Center for Retirement Income, wrote an article focused on the optimal Social Security claiming age. He discusses how patience needs to be practiced, especially when it comes to retirement planning. Far too many people act impatiently when making retirement planning decisions. One area of retirement planning where there can be a clear economic gain by being patient is with claiming Social Security benefits. Despite its importance, far too many people make the decision without understanding all of their options.
Jamie Hopkins
The basic guidelines for claiming Social Security are simple: for those who qualify, benefits can be claimed as early as age 62, and as late as age 70. The longer the person waits, the larger the monthly workers benefit will be. Experts often recommend delaying claiming benefits as long as possible, ideally to age 70. However, research shows that very few people actually do that.
