New Research Reveals Women Particularly At-Risk When It Comes to Disability

According to a new study released by The State Farm® Center for Women and Financial Services at The American College, women — whether they’re working or a stay-at-home moms, single or married — are most at risk both physically and financially when it comes to disability.

“The implications of this research are startling. Financial services professionals need to start educating their clients, especially their female clients, about the steps they can take to prepare for disability,” said Mary Quist-Newins, ChFC®, CLU®, CFP®, Director of The State Farm Center for Women and Financial Services at The American College.

The American College successfully launched the Retirement Income Certified Professional in early April, and already the program has over 1,000 registered students!

The debut of this program is timely, as our research shows that for the next 17 years, seven thousand Americans will reach retirement age every day. A joint survey by The American College and Investment News was especially revealing:

  • Close to 95% of respondents provide retirement income services to their clients.
  • Nearly 94% of those polled believe most advisors and wealth managers need
to know more about retirement income planning.
  • Over two-thirds (68%) of the pool believes that there is a need for a serious
professional designation dedicated to retirement income planning.

At three courses, the designation is the right length, with the right level of detail. Instead of focusing on one set of products or portfolio management techniques, we expose advisors to the full range of strategies for constructing reliable streams of retirement income for their clients.

The program's first course, Retirement Income Process, Strategies, and Solutions (HS 353), covers the essential foundations of retirement income planning. Students in this course will learn the science and technique of plan creation, customization, and strategy.

Students can sign up for our introductory scholarship offer, and receive all three courses, delivered on an automated schedule, for the unbelievable price of $1,349! A savings of over $650!

O. Alfred Granum

New Center: The Northwestern Mutual Granum Center for Financial Security

In honor of the legendary insurance agent O. Alfred Granum, CLU®, one of the nation’s preeminent financial services organizations, Northwestern Mutual, has agreed to donate $4.2 million over the next four years to The American College to create the Northwestern Mutual Granum Center for Financial Security. When completed, the donation to fund the Center will be the largest single corporate gift ever received by The College.

A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for June 27th and will include a tribute to Al Granum. The Center’s Executive Director, Sharen King, MSM, along with the Center’s Board of Advisors, will be instrumental in shaping an agenda that allows the Northwestern Mutual Granum Center for Financial Security to forecast emerging trends, identify and address industry opportunities and pressure points, and elevate the public’s appreciation for insurance and financial services.  The Center will focus on the delivery of relevant, actionable research along with innovative best practices pursuant to the changing face and needs of the marketplace.

Dr. Larry Barton, CAP® O. Alfred Granum Chair in Management, had this to say, “The Northwestern Mutual Granum Center is not, for us, just a physical space. It represents a monumental, remarkable investment in knowledge. How can we provide the most suitable products for clients, providing the very financial security that may have eluded them without proper planning. Imagine a place of inquiry, a center for cutting-edge research, a roundtable where producers, partners and directors can debate and discuss where our industry is going and must go. Imagine creating tools that serve not just the needs of one’s agency, but that lift and empower all advisors and the needs of consumers. We are incredibly energized at the journey ahead, and thank each of you who has invested in this centerpiece of knowledge.”
