The American College Celebrates Ethics Awareness Month!
Maintaining ethical practices in the financial services industry is central to the mission of The American College. To promote ethical advising practices, the industry has designated March as Ethics Awareness Month.

The American College Cary M. Maguire Center for Ethics in Financial Services provides an arena to explore the ongoing challenges in the financial services industry, and creates an environment where ethical issues can be discussed with candor among peers.

Center Director and Assistant Professor of Ethics at The American College, Julie Ragatz, authors the blog “Ethically Speaking” which discusses various ethical situations and poses poignant questions around this important topic. Her blog can be found here.

The Future of Social Security Might be
More Grim Than Anticipated.

The Future of Social Security Might be More Grim Than Anticipated.
Social Security benefits have become the main source of retirement income for a reported one-third of Americans, but projections suggest the shortfall may come as early as 2030. While the Old-Age and Survivors portion of Social Security pays retirement benefits to retirees, another part of Social Security benefits is the Disability Insurance Trust portion which reported paying benefits out to nearly 11 million people last year. Due to funding issues, disability benefits may run out in 2016 unless some kind of resolution is implemented. One outcome, which has happened eleven times in the past, is a reallocation of funds from the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust portion of it, decreasing what’s left for retirees.

Jamie Hopkins, Assistant Director of the New York Life Center for Retirement Income, published an article on discussing the funding issues causing the shortfalls of Social Security benefits and how the government could work to resolve them.

The American College is Moving Toward a Core Curriculum in 2016

Over the years, the faculty at The American College has chosen to make several changes in our various programs to keep the education current and relevant. As a result, designation requirements may be different now depending on the dates students enrolled in their programs. In order to make it easier for students to understand designation completion requirements, The American College will be moving to a standardized curriculum for our primary designations effective
July 1, 2016.

What this change means is that students who enrolled in a program on or before December 31, 2014 and have not completed their designations under old program requirements by that date will move instead to the most current curriculum requirements. Records of old courses will remain on student transcripts, but some may no longer count toward program credit, depending on whether or not they are part of the current curriculum requirements.

It is important to note that in-progress students working on old curriculum tracks still have until July 1, 2016, to complete their designation under those requirements.
