The American College - Connections: Inside The DNA of Financial Services

September 2012

Your College CEO Blasts Statements from Incoming FPA Leader Lauren Schadle

FPA - Financial Planning AssociationThe President and CEO of The American College, Dr. Larry Barton, CAP®, blasted quotes attributed to Lauren M. Schadle, the Financial Planning Association's in-coming chief executive as “ill-informed and detrimental to consumers, especially those in the middle and lower income brackets.”

Dr. Barton, CAP® took exception to comments attributed to Schadle in InvestmentNews that “…one profession and one designation is the best way to build the financial planning profession.” (InvestmentNews, August 22, 2012).

“It is apparent that Ms. Schadle believes that one designation, the Certified Financial Planner® designation- is a panacea for all planners. Not true,” stated Barton. “FPA also wants to define ‘planning’ as a separate profession instead of recognizing it as the discipline it is, one used throughout financial services. The FPA already has enough challenges, and believing in a monopoly just adds to their headaches.”

“As the 79 million Baby Boomers continue to retire in greater and greater numbers and begin to tap into their retirement income resources, the financial planning focus will pivot from asset build up strategies to asset drawdown strategies,” IRI President and CEO Cathy Weatherford said. “To meet the needs of this vast demographic group, advisors will need the best information available on the most effective drawdown strategies. Gail Chisum, CLU®, ChFC®: September 2012 Alumnus of the Month

Gail began his career with Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance Companies in 1984 as an agent in North Louisiana. Gail received his degree in Business Administration from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. After going through The Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in college, he entered the Army and served in Vietnam, where he was later honorably discharged as a Captain.

In 1990, Gail became Vice President of Sales for Louisiana Farm Bureau Insurance Companies. He always felt that education gave him an edge and instilled that philosophy in his agency force. Gail earned his CLU® and ChFC® designations from The American College and feels they were a differentiator in his career.

During his tenure as State Sales Manager and Vice President of Sales, Gail has frequently been a speaker on leadership, particularly for the insurance industry. During his time as Vice President of Sales, his leadership team has lead the state sales organization to be the leading life producing state in their 11 state organization. They have consistently been highest in premium and volume per agent in the last ten years. During his tenure, he has actively promoted the CLU® designation, working with the American College to do onsite schooling, sending agents to The College and promoting self study.Â

Congratulations, Gail!
